poem #29

conversations

CONVERSATIONS THAT MY FRIENDS WOULD HAVE IF THEY WERE HONEST WITH EACH OTHER

A:  “I like men who look good on paper.”
B: “But treat you badly in actuality.”
A: “I like to think I can mend them.”

B: “I like men who aren’t ambitious. Who are sweet when they’re with me.”
A: “And cheat vigorously when they’re away.”
B: “I have stunted self-esteem.”

C: “I like men who have bottomed out already and have zero expectations.”
D: “And never take you on vacations. Or buy you anything.
C: “I know what I won’t be getting.”

D: “I like men who like other men but are with me for religious reasons.”
C: “That and you dislike sex.”
D: “So what? Amen to that.”
